Edward J. Carlin-FEATURED RESIDENT-FEBRUARY- 2009

FEATURED RESIDENT-FEBRUARY- 2009

With farm conglomerates and agri-business farming so prevalent in our society today, it is refreshing to still see an occasional family farm left in our area.  One such place is the farm owned and operated by Ed Carlin and his wife Beverly that is located on Rutabaga Road right here in New Dosey Township.

Edward James Carlin was born on June 3, 1942, in Morris, Minnesota.  He is the 3rd from the youngest of 9 children born to farmers Edward Harold Carlin and his wife Vivian Lillian (Corcoran) Carlin.  Ed attended school through the 8th grade in Morris, but, as was very common with farm kids back in the 1950s, Ed dropped out of school to work on the farm.

The family lived on the Morris farm until Ed was 15 years old, then moved to a different farm at Herman, Minnesota.  He lived at this place until 2 years after his marriage.

Ed’s aunt and uncle took him to a dance back in the early ‘60s and when they returned to the aunt’s home, she asked him to give the babysitter a ride home.  That babysitter was a young girl named Beverly Whalen.  They had a nice visit on the drive to her home and the relationship continued and Ed and Beverly were married in September of 1964.

The young couple eventually moved to Colombia Heights where Ed worked for Hy-Pro Pumps for 29 and ½ years, retiring in 1994.

They owned a cabin on Timber Ridge Road off McDermott Creek Road in New Dosey Township, so after Ed retired, and since it had always been a dream of theirs to get  back to farming, they bought the farm they now own in September of 1994 and moved north.   The main emphasis of their farm is beef cattle and pigs.

Ed and Bev have 6 children- Son James and his wife Bonnie live in Isanti.  Son Bob lives with them.  Son John and his wife Kay and 2 children, Ian and Nathan, live in Zimmerman, while daughter Angie and her husband Brian Steele are from Alexandria.  Daughter Jenny and her husband Rob Gerske live in Princeton and son Bill and his wife Amanda and their son Benny live in Sandstone.  That leaves the youngest son Dale who lives in Askov.  All of the Carlin children have done well which is a testament to the good parenting of Ed and Beverly.

Ed has always been active in township affairs.  He was a  town supervisor for over 10 years.  He currently serves on the township planning commission and is a member of the Duxbury Volunteer Fire Department.  He is employed part-time as the driver of the truck for the Tri-Township Disposal District.  He is also a member of the Catholic Church in Sandstone.

Ed leisure time activities include hunting, fishing, and, as he says” I like to have coffee with the guys at the Main Street Grocery in Askov every so often”

Ed Carlin is a hardworking, friendly person who has proven himself to be a valuable member of our community.   It is a good feeling to have a real farmer out here.

FEATURED RESIDENT- JANUARY 2009

Most of the people who live out here in the little hamlet of New Dosey Township are senior citizens. We are either long time residents or former weekenders who have retired here. There are, however, a few young people who have chosen to live and raise their families here in the forest land. One such person in Erika Marie Fornengo.

Erika was born on August 8, 1972, in Sandstone, Minnesota, to Gerald and Kathleen Olson. She has one sibling, her sister Rochelle. Erika attended all 12 years of her K-12 education at the East Central School District, graduating in 1990.

She then took an EMT course at Mercy Hospital in Moose Lake via the Hibbing Technical College. She worked for some years on the Pine County ambulance crew.

She also had a stint of employment at a clinic in Fridley, Minnesota.

Erika married Cloverton resident Jason Fornengo on September 27, 1997, and they lived with his parents Robin and John while their own home was being built next door. Their son Dominic was born in 1998 and little Adam came along in 2003.

Erika has worked for Pine County for the past 8 years. She is the office manager for the Pine County Coordinator and loves her job.

She and Jason and the boys spend a lot of their leisure time snowmobiling, 4-wheeling and camping. An especially favorite campground is the one on the Totogatec Flowage in Wascott, Wisconsin. Their 3 dogs- Chip, Kota, and Zack are also a source of pleasure in their lives.

Erika is a bright, hardworking young wife, mother, and career woman whom we enjoy having in our community.

December 2008 – Clinton Todd Elliott

FEATURED RESIDENT-DECEMBER- 2008

We don’t have many teenagers out here in our little township, so Clint Elliott stands out in more ways than one.

He was born Clinton Todd Elliott on December 20, 1990, to DeVonne and Todd Elliott, who owned a home on McDermott Creek Road. Clint has one sister Candy.

Clint’s mom passed away when he was 3 years old and at age 5, he moved with his dad and Candy to Isanti. He attended Isanti Elementary School through the 6th grade. His father married Vicki Simonson in 1997 and this brought his step-brother David into his family. When David had graduated from high school in 2004, the family moved back to their homestead in Cloverton.

Clint is now a junior at East Central High School in Banning Junction where he excels in art. Some of his beautiful pottery work can be seen and purchased at the Hay Creek Outpost, which is owned and operated by his family. Clint has worked part-time at the Outpost since it opened. He also has the job of mowing the lawns at the town hall and the Cloverton cemetery.

In addition to art, Clint has an interest in landscaping. An example of his talent with this is the lawn work he has done at their home. He also enjoys 4-wheeling and snowmobiling. His mom Vicki added to this interview by saying that Clint also does some home interior work in their home.

Clint will graduate from high school in 2010 and is looking forward to a future that includes landscaping. Those of us out here in New Dosey Township know that this friendly, hardworking young man will do well at whatever he chooses for his life’s work.
